Subject: Looks like Mike MacDonald will be Bonas next coach

Good guy. Wasn’t ready when he took over to Beilein.

Early portal targets for Woj and Mike include Benjamin Bill and Zach Philipkoski of Daemen, who would be following their coach into D1. Deng Garang of Le Moyne is also a name to watch.

The press conference for Mike will be held around April 8th at St. Bonaventure. Conveniently Mike Vaccaro of the @nypost, a booster of MacDonald’s hiring and a close friend of Woj, is having an event on campus April 8th to promote his new book, The Bosses of the Bronx.

[> My thoughts on Mike MacDonald as Bonas next coach -- DB, Mon, March 30 2026, 9:12:38

Mike MacDonald is a good guy unfortunately his tenure with us was poor. He inherited a respectable program under John Beilein and oversaw its decline. His final record at Canisius was 108–153 (.414) overall and 67–95 (.414) in conference play.

At Medaille & Daemen he had a winning formula. His strategy relies on finding underrecruited kids from Buffalo and developing them over several years into successful players, though most of these players would not be D1 caliber. His high win rate at Daemen is attributed to the weakness of their conference, which is a one-bid Division II league where they dominate lesser teams.

Let’s see if this formula works in D1 with Bona.

It’s a calculated approach to prioritizing control and cost savings, rather than proven D1 success, risks the team's ability to secure better players. Woj will find it very difficult to sell this decision to the fanbase, as the argument that “he went here” lacks substance.

In any case, I wish him success.
