Belamore/Dragzfuth part three

Lady Dolimite, in haste brushed passed me, a strange look on her face
and mounted Pax unsaddled yet, and galloped full speed from the stable
to the gate without so much as a nod toward me. Fat Percy and lanky
Scar followed behind her, keeping at a distance.

Could I sit a horse or hold a sword I would have followed this
suspicious pair of no-goods. But, alas I can barely shovel dung one
armed or cinch a saddle without teeth and shoulder to aid me.

Someone comes.

"Belamore, Sir Blekangus wishes his horse ready by 4." Old guard
Parnell said when suddenly the roof cracked and a man fell through into
the hay stack.

Parnell drew his sword and placed the point at the back of the
intruder's neck. :Stay perfectly still...Tis you, Sir Dragzfuth." He
sheathed his sword. "I beg thee pardon...but what mischief are the up
to?"

"Ahh, Parnell. You caught me." Sir Dragzfuth said, brushing straw from
his tunic. "I have been testing the royal guard, to see who is alert
and who is not. I shall commend thee to Sir Blekangus as the most alert
of all." Sir Dragzfuth slapped the old guard's shoulder and walked him
to the door and watched as Parnell, full stride in pride crossed the
court yard.

He turned quickly. "My horse." He said.

"Dragzfuth, a moment of your time." I said, looking at the hole in my
roof.

"Be brief, man." He noted that his horse was already tethered outside
and waiting.

I turned to face him and removed my hood. "Dost thou know me?"

"Of course, you are Belamore the dung forker. All know who-"

"Look closer, my young friend." I brushed my grey hair back away from
my forehead revealing the purple birthmark.

Dragzfuth's face flushed, his eyes open wide and he dropped quickly to
one knee. "Sire, all thought you dead."

"Stand up, before some one sees." I replaced my hood.

He stood, his lips trembling to say a thousand things but I began
instead, constantly watching the door.

"Thee are the only knight to be trusted. Meet with me at midnight at
Church Rode cemetery...but first you must follow after Lady Dolimite,
her life may be the price if you do not make haste."

"Yes, I too felt this when I saw those two scoundrels follow
her...but...I saw you fall in the battle of Dead Pines...I watched the
bier burn when Morticane lighted the timbers underneath."

"Go quickly...I will explain all tonight." I hurried him to the door
and watched him mount and ride off.

Yes. The battle of Dead Pines. It still rages in my mind after all
these years. Once a mighty king was I, no better at sword and lance,
nor none more handsome in all the land than I, The Mighty King Belamane.

The army of King Zillion faced us that day. My brother on my left and
trusted Lord Justin with his long sword at my right...The charge sounded
and my army went forth and as I spurred my stallion...my brother's sword
took off my leg nd Justin my right arm unseen by my army or the other
knights I fell; trampled in the raging battle that defeated King
Zillion.

Only the wood carver, Papa Benardo had witnessed the traitor's act. He
severed the arm and leg of a headless fallen soldier and traded my royal
garb with him and in royal cape he dragged me into the forest and with
wicked witch Keecadoran saved my wretched body and damned my eternal
soul...to live, forever as tormented, maimed and ugly Belamore.

Dusk has come and gone
Night is full along
Midnight hour will be here soon
My wagon of two wheels
creaks and moans
The ass in lead
and I the behind
guide in coax and grunt
my donkey cart
to the tavern
of Three Barrel Dreg

A crow from castle tower flies
Circling overhead like a vulture
then lights upon my shoulder
Purpel-dark black feathers shine
and smell of horrid smoke
In my good ear it screeched
over and over and over
KEE! KEE! KEE!

I flicked the bird away
Into the alley it flew
and perched on the
sill one red eye on
me as I tethered my ass
and dragged my leg into
the shadows of the alley
and crouched by the window
The green eye of the crow
and I watched my
dancing Ezella

KEE! the bird screamed again
then whispered in my ear.
"NEVER!!!" I growled.
and slapped the crow to flight
and it was gone

With one tear
I listened to the bells
on her ankles jingle
as I watched my
Ezella dance

continued...
