I left the boy, Shane with Dragzfuth on Ezella's pallet. In the shadows
I waited until Ezella returned with the healer Goodman and watched him
apply leaches to the poison wound. If the leaches die, Dragzfuth would
live, but if they live, he will die.

A horse was trotting up the main street and I drag-walked to the front
of the alley to see Dolimite's palimino prance by, riderless. I must
find her.

"What do you there old freak?" Nikoli drew his dirk and kicked my good
leg out from under me. "A free show through the window? You must pay
to see my ladies dance. Give me your purse old fool, then gawk all you
like." He kicked me again.

"Ahh...a contest of men." It was Sir Blekangus. "I love a contest
between men." He stepped in front of me and faced the trembling Nikoli.

"He is a thief of services. This is not your concern." Nikoli quickly
sheathed his dirk, but attempted to bluff his courage in front of the
huge tower of iron before him.

Blekangus stood almost seven feet tall and his shoulders almost touched
both walls of the alley.

In his booming-barrel voice Sir Blekangus said. "Not concerned, my man.
Just wish to watch, but I would enjoy a fair contest. Perhaps I should
cut off your leg and leave you both arms. That would be fair. You
shall need both arm to defeat Belamore's left arm. He has the strength
of twelve men in that arm." Blekangus kept moving in Nikoli's space and
backing him up. "Or perhaps I should do contest with you myself. Your
knife against my left hand."

A quick turn and Nikoli hopped onto the boardwalk and backed in hurried
steps to the tavern door. "I have no quarrel with you Sir Blekangus,
that old fool is not worth all this."

"Just as well. My sword polished this very morn and do not wish to
tarnish it with the filth of a gutless pig " He sighed. "Run along
Nikoi."

I was on my feet. "My gratitude Sir Knight."

"My pleasure old Belamore. 'Tis you to whom gratitude is due. You give
me just reason to watch the coward squirm. I detest cowards. Had he
not knocked you down you woulds't have had no need of me this night.
Thee are quiet adept with one arm ten many two armed fools in my army."
He walked with me to my cart. "I am told you have the ear of Lady
Dolimite. As has...the...full attention of the king."

"I can speak with her, but she does not always listen. She is head
strong. What woulds't thou have me say?" I climbed in the cart.

"It shall be winter soon. After the snows in the spring the hordes will
surly come. King Morticane is not his brother and does not hold the
allegiance of all his Bennerets and garrisons. I leave now to reinforce
my own castle and increase my small army. My archers are true and
swordsman fair and pikemen the best in all the land...but alone we shall
fall...all the castles, one by one to TanKan and his thousands..." he
paused as Lord Justin and 1 horseman galloped through the street and
rounded the corner down Bensington Road at a deadman's pace. "He must
stop this foolishness and be a king and honor his brother's once and
mighty throne. Belamane knighted me on the battlefield after we
defeated TanKan once before. But he will return. Mark me...and
Belamore," Blekangus handed me a pouch of coins. "This is for you.
You cared well for my horse and you have a good eye. You always made my
left stirrup 6 inches shorter than the right. Few men know my one leg
is shorter. Should you grow tired of yonder castle, come south to mine
and tend my livery. Beware Nikoli and take care my friend."

I drove my donkey cart in the direction behind Blekangus and his men
until we parted in outside the village; he went south and I took the
road to Papa Benardo's cabin where Dolimite would if she be indeed still
alive.

...........

Morticane infull drunken stuper weaved at the top of the long staircase
in the center of the castle, bottle in both hands. He stopped short his
desent and turned toward the queens cchamber where a horrendous howl
filed the corridors and a screem of great magnitude. Morticane raised
one bottle...."God save save the queen." He cheered and drank the
remains of his right hand and through the bottle over the rail. It
smashed to the floor below. "Or save the poor fool who beds her this
night." He laughed a hollow laugh and wandered down the stairs. He
staggered to the door and navigated halfway to the court yard
calling..."Belamore! Belamore! I come to reckon with thee this night!
" With this he drew his sword as Parnell watched on.

Parnell left his post and went to the limping king before he reached the
stable door, sensing poor Belamore was in for foul drunken trouble.

"At your service your magesty."

"My service? My service? Belamore is the king, not I. I need no
service against an unarmed cripple....HA HA HA...good jest...I am a true
jester not a king. Go away guard and leave me reckon with the
stableboy!"

Parnell went back to his post. Morticane entered the stable and called
out. "Come out come out I know who you are..." He fell to his knees
and whispered. "I am sorry my brother, forgive me. I tricked
Keecadoran. I shall not plot to kill old Janora and steal her Agarth
stone." He giggled. "I lied to her and be damned I am." He picked up
a pail and turned it over after bringing it under the loft hook and
rope. After many attempts he stood on the pail and cried out...."No
Belamane-Belamore I never meant for all this...Forgive me!!!" He
placed the hook, point at his neck and kicked the bucket.

Parnell ran in after the pail flew out in the yard.

"Guards! Guards! Belamore has killed the king!!"

continued...
