Subject: Robert Klein Interview with Steve... Part One...

Hello!
A couple of days ago, we were discussing the Robert Klein interview with Steve on a thread. Since I have it on CD, I offered to transcribe it and post it for everyone. Well, part of it is done. I'll try to post some each week. Please realize that this is a live interview and sometimes they were talking over each other and I might have missed a bit here and there. But for the most part, it is word for word. R is for Robert, S is for Steve.. etc..
Enjoy!

This is a live interview in front of a live audience taped in NY right after Greg Rolie left the band. Actor Tim Curry (Clue/The Rocky Horror Picture Show) is the other guest.

R ~ My next guest has a wonderful time too. (Steve laughing) One of the most enthusiastic Rock and Roll stars and composer I've ever met. He really loves his work. And he's so good at it. We welcome Steve Perry of Journey.
S ~ Hi!
R ~ Welcome, welcome Steve.
S ~ Nice to be here.
R ~ I read some things about.. that you really love just performing - going on the road, it's your lifeblood, you said.
S ~ Yeah, we go on the road for about 9 months of the year and it's a long time to be away from square one.
R ~ Do you take the soap from the Holiday Inn?
(Everyone laughs)
S ~ Naw, I don't take the soap.
R ~ Well, I feel that it's not right anymore to take the towels.
S ~ I take the towels though.
R ~ I feel the towels are not fair but I think the soap and the bathing cap are mine. What do you think?
S ~ No, I don't take the soap.
R ~ Not the soap.. I don't like when the soap is too big. By the time the soap's gone..
Tim Curry ~ It's not in Holiday Inn's anymore.
R ~ No, it's not. Only small soaps.
T ~ This is true.
R ~ Maid gets cheap, cuts off a shaving "Here you are" like in war time.
R ~ I'm sorry.
S ~ I was just wondering something. The marvel of radio is one thing, but the people can't really see what you look like.
R ~ Right.
S ~ But people here in the audience can see what we look like, they all have been looking at these wonderful pink high heels you've been wearing.
(Laughter)
S ~ And it's just something people should know.
R ~ Well now...
S ~ It's a nice thing, they look great. They match.
R ~ I'm secure in my masculinity enough that when I saw a gorgeous pair of pink mules ..
(Steve laughing)
And they were only $9.99... I couldn't resist.
S ~ I don't blame you.
(Both laughing)
R ~ You're wondering if I really have them and the answer is yes I do. That's how we've been getting the laughs.
(Everyone laughing)
R ~ Actually, your shoes are pretty interesting themselves.
Hold them up to the microphone.
S ~ Can you see them?
R ~ These were stolen from one of Santa's elves.
(Everyone laughs)
R ~ They are, I'll describe them for you at home..Taiwanese booties made of maybe, a man-made fiber. They're a little..
S ~ That's so!
R ~ Practical too!
S ~ And very warm!
R ~ You live in San Francisco now?
S ~ San Francisco area, yeah. Just moved there.
R ~ You didn't even kind of have a base until recently..
S ~ How do you find out about all this stuff? This guy's pretty slick.
R ~ There's a woman in the back with a tremendous sign "He didn't have a base until recently"
S ~ Ahhh.. I see. No, I was on the road for at least, almost 3 years and decided to get a place about 8 months ago. In San Francisco.
R ~ Well, where would you actually stay when, where are you from? California?
S ~ I was raised in Central San Joaquin (spelling?) Valley of California. Small town of Hanford. Near Bakersfield, everyone knows where Bakersfield is.
R ~ Right. A lot of lettuce there?
S ~ Ah, a lot of cotton.
R ~ Cotton.
S ~ Lot of cotton, alphalfa.
R ~ Cotton, you think of "Down upon the "
S ~ All kinds of cotton.
R ~ Edible cotton? Use it for..
S ` No, it's the type that you wear usually, not..
R ~ Cotton Candy.
S ~ It's nice, it's nice, they save it for the fairs usually.

Part two will be along in a couple of days...
