I think that most likely, very few people ever passed on a cd they were going to buy or bought a cd they weren't going to buy because of what some critic said. Richard Marx once said they get paid for basically doing nothing. I mean, they are professional opinion-givers, that's all. They may have more musical trivia knowledge than the average person, like how many albums did The Velvet Underground record with Lou Reed, but they don't know more chord progressions, melody, structure, harmony, etc. than the average person. They just give their opinion, and you know what they say about opinions, like something else, everybody has one.
