Yes your pretty much almost there Will, but beleive me a simple model of the room would be just as efficient, justflat models of the walls and floor and ceiling if need be..("lighten" mode on layers with AE.) also, the true proper length and perspective tapering of the saber could be handled by actually motion tracking a 3d version over the live action one, using the handle of the saber for tracking, and then to take it further rather than have a locked off camera, move it around, and track the camera too (maya live will do this pretty well) it would indeed take quite a while to iron out some of the little slips and tracking errors and no doubt a little keyframing here and there would be needed, but it would look awesome.. and hey Dave I never really messed with this starwars saber thing but you have done really well, I liked it.. Why not green a room out and then start playing with virtual sets, its not too difficult, so long as your camera tracking and lighting model is acurate.. I mocked one last year for a job, and although it did'nt get used / approved it was good experience.
