I am so glad to have found your message board! I am an experienced teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing, but this year I will have a child in my class that is not only deaf but autistic as well. He is 9 years of age. I know that he can read just about anything, but he doesn't function as well in other academic areas. He uses signs only to express the most basic needs, such as going to the restroom or wanting more food at lunch. His interactions with other children apparently consist of pinching and hitting etc. He is going to have a personal assistant in my classroom. I have been doing lots of research, but would love to hear from anyone with experience. I'm not really sure where to go with his academic program. He will be in class with 6 other children that are deaf or hard of hearing. I would like him to be a part of what we do as much as possible. Any helpful hints would be welcome. Thanks!
