Hi. I have a son who was diagnosed with moderate hearing loss at 9 months or so (he had numerous ear infections and fluid in his ear which made the hearing impairment severe until tubes were put in and the liquid drained). At about 4 he was diagnosed with autism. We put together a home program for him with habilitation workers paid for by the Department of Developmental Disabilities though we had to pay for and provide training. My son is now in the 2nd grade at an elementary school which has a deaf resource teacher. He is pulled out for the resource teacher, OT and speech therapy. The deaf resource teacher is quite good. We have had numerous meetings and they know when to stop pushing him. He also has a one on one aide at school though untrained. He does not sign (he stopped attending signs at about 2 1/2) and is verbal. He is socially and verbally like a 4 - 5 year old. When he started school in kindergarten, he had lots of echoalia and would respond to questions with one word answers. He now can tell stories and ask questions. He talks spontaneously and wants to be social. His academic skills are close to normal though he does not really test. We are having him repeat 2nd grade so as to give him more confidence, reduce stress (lots of stimming behavior at home) and to have peers closer to his operating levels. We also want him to succeed and to be able to academically meet all the requirements of school and not just be passed on. We just started him on Cellexa on a low dose which seems to help some in giving him more time at his best. We have not given him any other drugs other than trying secretin once without success. Also tried gluten and casein free diet without much success as well. The other good thing we did was to make a sibling. His younger sister is quite verbal and challenges him. Would like to hear about your situation or others.
