In reply to: Renee 's message, "deaf child who is autistic" on 09:05:39 05/04/02 Sat

My son is 8 years old (as of April 24) and is moderately hearing impaired. We diagnosed the hearing impairment pretty early because of ear infections. His autism diagnosis came about 3 and 8 months. He was in a pre-school at the school for the deaf and blind and I noticed that his social skills were far below his peers. He is our first child and we did not know what to expect especially with a deaf child. Tell me about your child. Level of impairment with both hearing impairment and autism. My son has learned to talk. At 5 years he could start to reliably give one word answers to questions. Now he can talk in sentences which are around a 4 to 5 year old level. He still does some echolalia repeating his own sentences under his breath. He is in 2nd grade and is doing ok with a deaf resource teacher, a one on one aide and some therapies (speech and OT). We had a home program which is phasing out in part because our student helpers have all moved on and in part because he is doing better and we need a higher level director to tell us what to do now. Would like to hear what you are trying and what is working.
