Subject: Canvas Of Purrs

(Mind if a newcomer leaps in?)

For years I've heard that
owning cats is a good thing
for your blood pressure
& stress level.
And as I write & look
over at the cute little
grey furry face resting
on my arm I must agree.

But I don't believe it's just
in the owning.
First of all, we cannot
own cats.
Sometimes & most times
they own us.
We are servants to the
furry fortress of Purrs.
We are their personal masseuses,
cooks & body guards.
Most of our duties are simple;
a cup of cold crunchies in a bowl,
a warm home & clean box.

The trick of the cat lies in
the petting.
Petting a cat proberly is
not merely an activity.
It't an art.
Like painting the perfect
piece onto canvas.
Every stroke counts
& must be laid on gently.
One stoke in the wrong place
may very well ruin the
whole setting.
Then the canvas just up & walks away.

During such stressful times
in my life,
I look to a cat for relief
& delight.
Such a mirror sometimes of myself,
selfish & independant.
That's why we get along.

Kerouac wrote once of the
joy of putting his face in the
soft warm belly of his kitten.
I know just where he was at,
so long as you don't do it too long
& get a claw in the eyeball.

Love all your cats
& they'll give it back.
Take in the thrill that they give.
Me I'll be just fine at the
end of a big bad day,
because I have two doses
of double fuzzy lovin'
to paint the prettiest
picture on.

One now laying on what I
just wrote,
the other batting at the pen
as I go.

How purrfect.
