Don't miss George Clooney's new film: "The Perfect Storm." It's about a Swordfish LONGLINER treated rather unkindly by the weather (e.g. 100 foot seas, etc). In the preview filmclips there appears to be some great shots of swordfish being pulled and piling up on the deck. But it looks like one ought to take some compazine before going in. Of course, reading the book first shouldn't hurt. Marty

Well.......... I posted a response but couldn't get in because of Stans new lockout system. Here's what I tried to post:

Perfect storm..... Perfect lie
I found the book vaguely disgusting....

After it came out there was a lot of sympathy for the longline industry. Freinds would often come up and say things like I read the perfect storm and now understand what it's like for you fisherman. Oh Yea! not quite...

On NPR longliners were presented as simple fellows in the time honored practice of working the sea. Immediately after: another book came out from a female longline captain. (Once again sympathetic to the industry)

In an interveiw: once again NPR She came out and Stated flatly: that Longliners are victoms of a global conspericy to stop the American way of free enterprise. That resturants that will not serve Longline caught swords are foolish and miss-guided. That catch limits (something like 20 tons) ruin the incentive to fish and once again...are against the American way of free enterprise. That if we don't "harvest" our swords others will. I've never been so angry as when I listened to Terry Gross interveiwing this women, and treating her like a respected author and authority on the state of the fishery. About the same time I heard this wisdom on the radio: I read that the average sword caught by her free enterprise fleet had come down to 47lbs.

Longliners are the aquarien equivalent of locusts. The go where the fish are and kill them off. Then once they've destroyed the ecological balance they move on to "greener" pastures. I'm not interested in films Books or talk shows that herald the skill and braverey of these people that I see as no better than criminals.

Yea the effects may be great. Yea it looks cool. In my opinion it would only of been "perfect" if it took the whole industry right off the map.

JMO

Tight lines Jim
