Date Posted: 944109800PST "long-range private boat report" Posted by BigE on Dec-01-99 at 01:42 PM (PST) Alllcoast sportfishing. I know this is a bit out of local range, but I just got back from 2 weeks at mag bay and I thought I would post a report. I was fishing on a friends boat that was down there for the entire month of November. The only word to describe it down there would be unbelievable. First few days we fished out around the thetis bank for lots of 15-25 lb. dorado and a few stripers with no tuna or wahoo. We saw the Royal polaris anchored on the thetis and it looked like a local 1/2 day boat with all of the elbows on the rail.(I hope it got better for them down there). After that it was all marlin for the next week. All we had to do was find the friggots and the marlin were under them thick. We had doubles and triples on stripers all day long. It was sad for some of my friends that were new to fishing down there because now they think that that is typical marlin fishing. I had never seen anything like it in my 20+ years of fishing. I was shooting video when we had about 8 fish come up on two teasers and after we had three baitfish going, there were still 5 or so marlin all lit up just swimming around the boat. We ended up with 15 fish for one 1/2 day of fishing on that day. Inside the anchorage at the entrance to mag bay there was good fishing for big sierra, yellowtail and grouper in the late afternoon. There were also some mystery fish hooked and not stopped....probably big yellows or grouper. At night we would put out a light and it was amazing to see the amount of different marine life we saw. It took about 10 minutes to make bait under the light and you could have three different species on one bait rig(macks, grunts, needlefish, pompano, halfbeaks, smelt, etc...) We did fish the mangroves for 1/2 day and got lots of halibut and pompano and assorted groupers but no snook. That place is definately out of the way and takes planning to go there but it is definately worth it. The locals are VERY friendly and they traded about 25 big lobsters for some old clothes and magazines. We went diving during the day and the amount of lobster we saw was amazing. The locals told us that they don't like americans taking them since that is how they make their money and they were more than happy to trade anything useful for them anyway. The total count for the boat during the month was 152 stripers, 1 sailfish, and lots of yellowtail, sierra, grouper and misc. inshore fish for 18 days of fishing. The only bummer was that there were no tuna or wahoo....oh well, next year. I will definately be taking my boat down there next November and I would like to get more boats to go with me. If anyone has any questions about Mag Bay or the trip for next year, e-mail me. Good Luck [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
