Passed the question on to some freinds here's what they had to say:

"Machine Buffing:"

Machine Buffing with 3-M rubbing Compound will remove the paint and also polish the Gelcoat, You may need to switch to Polishing compound to even out the polished area after removing the letters depending on how oxidized the existing Gelcoat is...
GO SLOW as to not burn areas of the boat finish
Machine Rubbing compound is the coarser of the two so you want to start with that then move on to the finer grit polishing compound to finish out the job.

Posted by Reel Hungry: Acetone I agree with him 100% it will take a lot of elbow grease no said it was easy, then if that doesnt do the trick,Go to West Marine they sell a paint remover or stripper for fiberglass gel coat.Try to buy one in a spray can if you can, a little more managable .This stuff works best in the direct sun.I would mask around the letters before applying stripper. Then as soon as it starts to bubble clean off with a hard 3m blue squeegee and then acetone,I wouldnt just leave it,Id baby sit it, they make it weaker than the stripper for automotive or aircraft but you still have to be carefull..After that water sand lightly with 1500 grit wet or dry sandpaper, then buff with hand rubbing compound if you dont have a buffer.
Good luck Tim
PS: I work in this field

Sounds good to me. Tight lines Jim
