Kona Hawaii Fishing Report 1/13/00

The Blue Marlin and Striped Marlin catch has been pretty good so far this year even though there aren't many boats out fishing. The water has been near flat and the sun is shinning but the tourism is slower than normal for this time of year. The predominate North current has returned so there's lots of bait fish on "the grounds" and that's where most of the Marlin are being caught. Also there has been some Yellowfin tuna in the 50 to 100 lb. range in that area. The Mahi Mahi and Shortnose Spearfish bite remains good and it's a lot of fun to fight these middleweights on light tackle. The Bigeye tuna bite still hasn't started yet but some very small ones are starting to show up around the fishing buoys. Speaking of fishing buoys, OT buoy has been replaced after breaking loose in August but is no longer at 19-57.1N; 156-10.4W. The new coordinates given to me by the deployment team is 19-52.6N; 156-11.6W so I put it in my GPS and went out there. I found the buoy ¾ of a mile East of their coordinates and it already had bait fish around it. The Ono bite has been practically non-existent. The bottom fishing is getting better by the day and the Amberjack (20 to 50 lbs.) bite has been instantaneous in most of the good spots and a guarantee of a good fight.
