I have being following the Pacific/Hawaii shark finning issue for awhile now and have attempted to examine both sides of the arguments in an unbiased manner. It is obvious that the anti-shark finning group is well organized and extremely vocal and dedicated in attempting to push their agenda.

In contrast, the Pacific Fisheries Council has been relatively quiet, until recently. However, to their defense, I can only assume that this group is approaching the shark finning issue from a professional and scientific perspective. Based on all the numerous letters and articles printed by the anti-shark finning group, the Pacific Fisheries Council's approach is obviously not fast enough for them.

What I find very disturbing in this whole issue is the manner by which the anti-shark fining "eco-terrorists" have used sensationalized news/magazine articles, letters (including personal attacks) to justify their cause. They have even suggested a boycott of Hawaii as a vacation designation because of the shark-finning issue.

Despite the sensationalized garbage being disseminated by some individuals of the anti-shark finning group, I applaud the professional approach in which the Pacific Fisheries Council appears to be taking in addressing the shark fining. It appears to me, at least, that the issue is being examined from a scientific perspective rather than the knee-jerk reaction which I sense the anti-finning group is proposing.

I'm glad to see that Mr. Cook is speaking out on the shark fining issue. I'm sure if the Pacific Fisheries Council finds that the blue shark catch by the Pacific longline fishery is detrimental to the population, then appropriate management actions will be implemented.

John
