Date Posted: 939422140PDT In reply to: Jim Morris 's message, "Larger Makos being Caught?" on 939376459PDT Yea Yea Yea we west coasters don't know how to fish thats why you guys have traditionally gotten bigger Mako's.....What a load of ego driven uninformed C#@p. Out here it's usually a nursery fishery. Ie. this is where the young hang out until they mature enough to move on to the open ocean. Just as El nino~ brought in warm water species that normally are not in our waters. The La Nina~ effect has brought in fish that are not usually here. The California currents cooler water has moved much closer to shore this year. bringing with it a great Ablacore bite, and some very large toothy predators who love to chow down on Tuna. I was saying months ago that this would happen. It's to bad that due to a Varity of problems with boat work and family: I didn't get out enough to prove it myself, but the bigger sharks are here without a doubt. I'd like to inform Capt Tom in my personal experience and ten years of fishing out here, we've only lost three good fish, all to broken leaders. None were in the class of the fish caught recently. In fact the largest fish we hooked around 400lbs (couldn't find a scale large enough to weigh him), was caught on light tackle Ie 40 lb., I guess what I'm saying here is there is no skill problem, it's a lack of big fish problem. I've fished all three coasts: West coast anglers are the most aggressive innovative and skilled anglers in the US. We're using tackle that the rest of the country has not even heard of, and it's been like that for years. You may have a squidder, called so because it was developed for fishing live squid out here. How about a jigmaster: designed for the our candy bar style jigs (something you probably never heard of) out here. Wide 4/0's, Newell's, two speed reels: all first designed and tested on the California market. Half the fisherman back east still don't even know what spectra is. While we're whipping our fish with high tech standup gear you guys are still sitting in your big old fashioned fighting chairs, holding on to that big old long rod with that big old winch of a 12/0 filled with that old fashioned dacron just like your Papa used to use. From the recent things I've heard I gather your trying to make a Internet name for yourself by bashing the west coast Shark fisherman. We still remember all you guys coming around and asking questions when we opened up our boards. Questions like "does trolling for threshers really work?" Duh.... well.... yes it does. If you want to try bashing us in the name of self promotion at least get your facts straight. tight lines Jim [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
