However, I do ocean kayak in the surf and up to 3 miles offshore. In our area there has never been a attack on a ocean kayak, but I heard off the west coast there has been...by Mr G. White. We are suppost to have them in our waters too, but extremely rare. Anyhow, I do have the sense of protection in a ocean kayak, but even so...not too much protection if a good size sharks bumps that kayak and you flip over. I been out there and have seen many things....big stingrays, numerous tarpon, schools of jackfish, a big manta ray, and smaller sharks (3' and 4' blacktips), but nothing of considerable size. Last summer, a good buddy, Joe, of mine had a visitor that he never saw. He was in his 12' Ocean Kayak paddling out a good size bait(unkown to me), when a dorsal fin of a good size popped up behind him. Randy, the guy holding the rod, said when he saw it...it reminded him of the seen in "JAWS." When Joe dropped the bait, the shark went deep and disappeared. The whole time Joe is clueless...even when Randy is waving his arms...which was mistaken for "DROP THE BAIT! yor far enough." Anyhow, as Joe headed back to sure, up came the dorsal fin again...following Joe. He never new this shark was out there until Randy told him when he return to the beach. The bait was never touched. Was this shark wnat to attack??? Or just curious??? I would bet on the latter because if it was wanting to attack...it had all the time in the world to do so. Does this event keep us from doing what we do? Nope, the likely hood of a attack is slim to none. FISH ON!!, -BB- Just like Jim, we got plenty of stories. BTW, Jim...did you here about the shark attack we had here last year? [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
