: ... a woman in a kayak died when a shark took her arm.

Partly true, partly not, but a very unfortunate story, and a good lesson for many. This was a major story in Maui in April.

Tourist couple from NoCal in Maui rented a kayak. Paddled around the nearshore off Olawalu for several hours. Later that afternoon went out again, but this time the winds came up, very strong and very quickly, and they found themselves rapidly being pushed offshore, and in their tired condition, could not paddle back to shore directly into the wind.

They were not reported missing. Kayak drifted out to sea. Major wind and swells in channel to Kahoolawe during the night. Woman was knocked off kayak by swell, decided to stay in water next to kayak (warmer in the water). Husband joined her in water. While in the water, a shark attacked her, severing her arm. Husband pulled her onto kayak, but she died. Her body was knocked off into water, has not been recovered. The husband was lucky, as the kayak ran aground on Kahoolawe, where after two days he was rescued.

A tragic story. Several lessons can be drawn from it though: know your area, know your limits, and try to go out with others if possible. Conditions can change so quickly.

Bill
