Date Posted: 927501816PDT In reply to: ED 's message, "Re: Great whites and Kayaks II actual attack story." on 927501443PDT I've heard a few storys including these. A couple thoughts: Large Whites hunt seals just outside the break in some locations. There some great footage of this. A researcher placed a camera pointing down from a surfboard. His theory was that whites are visual hunters: they lie in wait down deep, attacking seals when the rest outside the surfline. The sharks he filmed were feeding on elephant seals(big). He studied their behaviour for years at the same location, even named them. He felt that the sharks were attracted by the silouete of the seal, once again visual. Shure enough his surfboard rig which was about the same size and shape (cast the same shaddow) was repetedly attacked by whites. They would appear out of no-where shooting strait up from below and striking. Oddly they did'nt feed right away. After striking the seal they would circle and wait for it to die before feeding. Great footage. I personally think this is why so in many of the people attacked by whites survive. The sharks hit them but they swim in before that big crunch at the end. A small kayak resting outside the surfline would cast the same kind of shaddow, makes me think. A woman in N. Cal. was the victom of this kind of attack a few years back. The other woman who died off H. Her attack sounds scent driven. In WWII hundreds of sailors and airman where killed by sharks after extended periods in the water. The most common culprit Blue sharks (slow moving scavengers). Anyone who's ever chummed for sharks knows its only a matter of time before blues show up. The sharks eventually will come. Urine, blood, even sweat are enough to attract sharks. I think they react to as litttle as one part per million, or something ubsurdly small like that. I would never ever hang on the side of a kayak in the open ocean as this woman did especially at night. Blues may be slow and rather stupid, but if you hang out in there turf long enough one will come sniffin around. One more thing you plastic guys dont want to hear this. I build a lot of shark lures for trolling and have experimented a lot with colors. With-out a doubt sharks are most attracted to bright reds oranges and yellows, every time I see one of those bright Kayaks I can't help but think about that little fact. Then again I once found a large green water jug with a 13inch Tigershark jaw mark on it. I wondered about this for a while then heard their favorite food is sea turtles. Hmmm...I guess what I'm saying is sharks feed on certain things, if you do'nt act like their food chances are everythings going to be cool.
