We had one rod setup out but were looking for sharks to dive with(in order to underwater tag them!). We were at the "9 mile
bank" waiting for some blues to get to the chum bucket before jumping in with them(like I have done at the Avalon Bank and at
Short Banks as well). However, after five buckets of "New Fishall" chum(which is the best chum that I have used to date as it
worked great for that "EXTRA" shoot from last November), all we had to show for it was a "guppie" blue! My feeling is that
longlining and netting(along with the finning of sharks that visit the waters off Hawaii from California as such is why I have been
so passionate about the Hawaiian shark' fin trade ban Bill!)has really taken its toll. In addition, Mexican commercial fishermen
are really working the sharks as well!

I recently co-wrote an article (with Bob Endreson who had helped write
the shark' fin trade ban Bill in Hawaii) about the shark' fin trade ban
Bill situation in Hawaii. This article will appear in the upcoming
July/August issue of "Discover Diving" magazine (which was recently
acquired by "Skin Diver" magazine as both "Skin Diver" and "Discover
Diving" are owned by Petersen Publishing). A complimentary issue of the
July/August issue of "Discover Diving" will be included with the July
issue of "Skin Diver" as such should be available soon (in the next week

or so).

Please forward the following which I had just received from Bob Endreson

on Oahu:

Hawaii still allows the needless slaughter of sharks. It is one of four
coastal states where fishermen can cut the fins off of
sharks and throw the shark back into the water either alive or dead.

99% of the sharks caught are finned while 86% of the
sharks are alive when brought on board the fishing boat. These sharks
are considered "bycatch" and are caught accidentally
while fishing for tuna or swordfish. Shark finning played a large part

in wiping out a large numbers of sharks not only in the
United States, but worldwide. We are attempting to prohibit this
practice and asking that the Federal agency that manages
fisheries here in the Pacific to take action to end this practice at
their June 17th meeting and we need your support. Some may
ask why protect sharks and the answer is simple. The shark is part of a
"Balanced Eco-system" and without sharks the balance
is altered which threatens the viability of other species as well.

You can help by simply going to:

http://www.westpacfisheries.net/actionalert.html which will give you
more background information on this cruel and wasteful practice, as well

as a

letter that can be sent to the State and Federal agencies who will be
involved in the decision making process with the click of a mouse. You
can send the letter as drafted or can modify it as you
wish. Finning is analogous to what the buffalo hunters did years ago
when they wiped out the buffalo simply for their hides
and tongue. Let’s not let history repeat itself by allowing fishermen to

kill over a billion pounds of sharks worldwide each year
simply to use only one percent of the animal for an aphrodisiac and
shark' fin soup.
