Spent some time at Fred hall early in the week. Great to run into so many guys I know from the web. Definitely had a good time. Not much impresses me these days but there were a few exceptions. The Aluminators were very cool. The Big Farallon very, very nice. Pacific skiffs especially the pilot house, awesome (check out the scuppers, too cool) The big Parker's were a disappointment. (What's with the quarter inch kick plate backs on the big ones?..Just cheap looking!!) For me though I was most impressed by Boulton Powerboats and the owner designer Mike Boulton who was showing his own boat (34 Kodiak) at the show. Talk about refinement. Too slick for me but well done. Check out the wiring under the decks, and the insulated fish hold. Everything was thought out and executed to perfection. Of coarse for 200 grand it should be!!! I'm just sayin that with most boats I look at the wiring and think: I could do better. I was taking leasons off these guys. Out of my range price wise but that's not the only boat these guys build. Check out the website. http://www.boultonpowerboats.com/ Everything from 18 skiffs to 34 footers that do 45 knots. Check out these pics:

I weld aluminum so when I look at a boat made out of it questions arise The engineering was all very well thought out. I especially like the angled chine and reinforced bow plates (excellent work) All that said what got me was the guys. Most boat companies higher some local help or a big breasted babe to show the boats. Mike the owner designer was there himself as well as another technician. No BS just straight technical talk from the guys who designed and built it. You could tell they knew every inch of thing from the chines to the wire ties, and were proud of it. Like I said I was pretty impressed. Now all I got to do get two jobs and rob a bank Check it out definitely worth the tour. Tight lines Jim By the way... That 34 with the 11'7" beam does 45 knots and has a 600 mile range on two hundred gallon tank. So we're talking a boat the size of my shop that will outrun Norms Maycraft 23 cc with the 225 suzuki and get better mileage to boot. Just outstanding IMO Gone fishing http://www.voy.com/318/ |
