"Bugs Butts and Bass Ohh my..SMB!!"

Bass Bugs and Butts...sounds like a weird B movie

Fished Saturday out of MDR for two good Halibut six and eight pounds, twenty or so Sandbass up to four pounds (I kept seven) then hooped for a limit of lobsters two and half pounds and up.

Here's the big pic:

Got a late start because I had to make a call to my mom (birthday 83, happy birthday Mom!!) still made it out by about eight. Larry had squid so I picked up half a scoop and headed out to the fleet fishing between the pipe and MDR. Not a ton of boats out there but a lot of talent. Saw Flomar, Locals only, Hunter, Max, Val, even Norm was out. Some of these guys are just about red hot when it comes to Halibut so at least I was working the right area.

No drift so I started slow trolling plugs and hooked up right away. First fish was a decent sandbass around four pounds then it was pretty much steady bass and shorts until I got an eight pound butt around eleven.

Within five minutes I hooked a double which turned out to be a Bass and about a six pound butt. (This one I took a pic of)

After that just more bass and shorts. Around three the wind kicked up and by four I was the only guy out there. Pounded around till almost dark looking for a big one but never found her.

The fish wanted dines not squid. I didn't have dines but I did have an assortment of Rapalas and caught all but a couple of my fish on them. I'm getting pretty used to this hard bait thing. The only bad part is I don't get to see Larry that much any more.

About dusk I raced the New Del Mar in down swell. Pretty fun running side by side in the slop. Normally I could out run her but it was pretty rough. I'd gun it down the face then turn uphill like a surfer as the waves came up from behind. Just a blast. We were neck and neck at the entrance and the guys up top in the pilot house all waved.

They could tell I was having a great time.

I pulled into the anchorage and got my nets ready but was immediately accosted by a lifeguard. Turns out someone had drowned or maybe drowned and they were looking for them. This went on for about three hours while I waited. After a while I started cruising around the rocks myself using the spot. No-one found anything and finally around eight they started leaving. At that point I pulled up and asked if I could start hooping. No problem.

It was still too rough outside so I put a couple of sets inside for a bunch of big spiders. Then the wind died and I moved out. First pull was three pounds and the just kept coming. John showed up from up North two short of a limit and I told him it was wide. Two more passes and we were both done. Very good hooping with almost all big bugs. Maybe my best night yet time and size wise.

I messed around a little cleaning the nets. Saw a squid boat going out and the New Del Mar returning from a twilight run. This time I just beat him to the harbor

I'd of taken more pics but the cams batteries died after that first one. Gave the bigger butt to a buddy so no pics on that one. The bug pics were taken at home. While I was shooting the dog went psycho and jumped in the net

Pretty funny.

I also found something weird when I was cleaning them. One of the bugs (a female) had been severely injured. She had a huge hole that had healed over in the back of her shell.

Also missing half her legs. If I noticed it on the water I'd of released her. No because I'm worried: the tail was fine but just feel such a survivor should of got the chance to pass on her genes.

All and all a great day on the water. Good to see some many of my friends out there as well

Tight lines Jim
