Subject: *A pinto filly watches her dam graze*

Banat lowers her head, parting her velvety black lips and tugging the sparse grass with strong white teeth. Estrella gazes at her mother, bored. A breeze drifts by, and the filly flares her nostrils and breaths it in. Horses... just horses and the grass Mother is eating. The equine scent is comforting. And the grass is just- well, actually it smells fresh and green, like springtime. I wonder how it tastes. Estrella stretches her neck and brings her delicate dial to the ground. Imitating her dam, she opens her mouth, pulling back her lips, and gets hold of a few blades. With great effort she pulls it up, trying to balance on her still-long legs and still be able to tug hard on the grass. She chews meditatively for a moment. Not bad, she thinks with surprise. She whickers, pleased, and trots away from her mother's side, proud to be so grown-up. Although the filly doesn't know it, in that instant she changed. She is no longer a small foal- she is turning into an independent filly. Soon she will leave the herd and venture out on her own to make a life for herself...
