Subject: *The pinto filly whickers sadly*

(I had to rewrite this because my really good-sounding last message was deleted!!! Errrrrr.) Estrella stands close to her dam, as if she were a small foal, yet it is not so. She is a yearling now, and it is time for her to depart and find a herd of her own. Her heart aches to stay, yet she cannot. It is her destiny to make a life for herself. She is very still- only her luminous ebon orbs move across the territory. The filly's eyes are filled with sadness and fear of leaving. A breeze picks up and plays with her mane and tail, turning her softly falling mane into wispy tendrils that tickle her sleek neck. Her silky tail blows across a flank. With a soft sigh she lowers her head, arching her neck gracefully. Estrella's muscles quiver slightly, and she flares her nostrils to take in the wind. She stands sillhouetted against the evening sky of palest blue, save the puffy, trailing clouds of pink, orange and lavender. Her hooves are planted firmly in the soil, and she reluctantly lifts them to walk across the turf to Damis Kubraa. She dreads each step- each step that brings her closer to leaving. Her muscles ripple under her smooth two-toned coat, its jagged pattern standing out among the uniform bays, chestnuts, blacks and grays. It appears comical, yet her grace and elegance make it striking. She approaches the stallion, and extends her tapered dial to lean her bony forehead against his neck, her breaths warm against his chest. She stays like that for a moment, feeling comforted and protected. Estrella finally lifts her head to look into Kubraa's eyes, her own dark orbs gazing at him fondly. She knows he was a better father to her than her true sire, Kryptonite. With a last nuzzle and a nicker of goodbye, she walks slowly back to Banat. This farewell shall be the last and the hardest. Since birth she has never been separated from her mother, except of course for short games with other foals. The filly's eyes stare at the ground. Slowly she lifts them, taking in her dam's glossy hooves, her slender legs, her muscular chest, her long neck, her delicate dial, memorizing every line and curve of her body so she will never forget. She meets her mother's tender, loving orbs, grief-striken yet trying to be brave for her filly. Banat longs to stay with Estrella here, but she has hopes of a future for her beloved daughter. Banat is the first to move, touching the pinto neck gently with her velvety muzzle and tracing its perfect arch to the yearling filly's withers, not yet full grown but filling out to make room for the strong heart. The chestnut mare lays her head across Estrella's back and closes her eyes. The pinto filly lays her dial on Banat's back as well, and they stand there, their shadows like mirror images of each other. After a minute Estrella removes her head, nuzzling her dam's neck. Banat whuffs softly and nuzzles her filly back. Estrella takes a step backwards and studies her mother one last time. Eyes locked on Banat, she takes another step and another, moving away from her dam. Estrella lets out a single, pain-filled whinny of distress, but the mare whickers back to comfort and reassure the yearling. The filly takes one more step backwards and then turns, heading for the mare's land and never looking back, her eyes fixed on the horizon and her future.
