Subject: Happy New Year! :)

I love this time of year ...
One reason - Fireworks! :)
We're going to my Mom's - she lives in the "country" - and, fireworks are allowed in that part of the county! :)
Don't know how the chickens who live next door to her place are gonna feel about the celebration, but I plan to be "armed and ready"!
My favorite are the "Saturn Missiles"! :)

Menu includes: Black-eyed peas, turnip greens, sweet taters, fried cornbread and pineapple upside-down cake! :)
Guess we'll have to add some sweet tea with the fixins?! :)

I also look forward to the New Year as a time of "New Beginnings"
Found a quote for the New Year that I like ...
taken from "Ring Out, Wild Bells" ...
- written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

"Ring out the old - Ring in the new."
"Ring out the false - Ring in the true."

Happy New Year!
with love from, BC :)

No fireworks for us. The dogs can't handle it.
Rather, I've been telling my sister some of the rituals I've gleaned from my Chinese friends.
For example, we're cleaning the house from head to toe; sweeping out all the bad luck to make way for the good of the new year.
We bought some oranges to set on the counter (had to have either 8, 9 or 10 to show prosperity.)
We also have to go to the bank and get some money to put in our wallets and purses so that we can expect more for the New Year. (It also helps if you buy a new purse or wallet so there's your excuse "girls".)
Wearing red brings good energy, but don't wear black or white as they are mourning colors.
It really helps if you can get a dragon or lion to come and scare the evil spirits away, but I don't think we'll find any down here in the sticks so instead, I think we'll just go to an early movie and then go out for Chinese food so we can be in our jammies and watching the fireworks on the telly rather than out with the "crazies."

One other ritual I picked up from a haole friend is putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Don't ask me why, but it works. That and some popcorn, of course,

Happy New Year to you all,

LauraG

Thanks for the rituals you posted Laura, I would like to do some of them- though I'm not sure I can get the house all clean by the 1st :)- maybe the office can suffice for now. We've never had any real traditions so it would be fun to start some. To everyone else- have a safe New Year's Eve, and a wonderful, prosperous, enlightening New Year!

Just remember, no cleaning on the first. Very bad luck!

Well, LauraG and Jenn ...
I've just about worked my way - cleaning - from one end of the house to the other ...
I found several coins during the process ...
My daughter bought a "new" coin purse at Goodwill the other day while I was searching through the vinyl LP's and 45's ..
My son bought a box of [fund-raiser] oranges from one of his students at the high school ...
I'm not too much a "fan" of wearing red ...
If I paint my nails a shade of crimson will that work?
Re: Dragons - not very many of those 'round Lebanon ...
how's about a "dragonfly"?! :)
We've added rice to our New Year's menu ...
so ...
hopefully, we'll be off to a pretty good start for 2011! :)

btw, the current temp here is 63 degrees! :)
don't know how long it's expected to last - but, it beats the ice and snow last week! :)

Sounds as though you've got the New Year in the bag.
As for your 63 degrees, I drove home from visiting a friend last night and the car thermometer was reading 25! Oh, but the sky.... absolutely stunning! It isn't often that we see the stars during the winter months.
Mary and I are off to the "Little Fokkers" and dinner this early evening.
I've always enjoyed Robert De Niro's acting, but I totally adore his comedy. There is something to be said for funny remarks coming out of that face.

Love to all,
LauraG

What a beautiful scene! I could look at something like that all day long- is this a view from your home?

JennOK, wish it was. Fortunately, it was taken from a friend's home on Whidbey Island, northwest of Seattle. I live in a "holler" much closer to the ocean. We are surrounded by hills and timber along the Wishkah River (which has overflowed several times recently.) We're high enough the we have nothing to worry about. We are also avoiding town and the beach this New Year as there is a clam tide and traffic is pretty bad. We live in a town that is the only access to the beach; one way in one way out and it clogs up during beach "happenings."

Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year,
LauraG

Hi BC! Sounds like you are doing great! I got as far as getting the office cleaned, things filed, etc. and cleaning through drawers in the kitchen and a couple of cupboards. I emptied a drawer for my spices and have a pile of "junk" from the 3 junk drawers that I am looking at. I have some "cutie" clementines in the fridge that should work and I believe I have a red sweater I could wear tomorrow. I found some change in the drawers too, so hopefully this will all help us have an incredible year! I wish it were warmer here. It is spitting rain right now, the snow is melting, and tonight and tomorrow we are to have below zero windchills. We are supposed to travel tomorrow so hopefully they are getting deicer on the roads. Happy New Year to you and everyone! Happy New Year Stewart if you read this.

We still have snow here.

Happy New Year, everybody. May it be all that you want it to be and more!

Happy New Year everyone!! I am so enjoying the 70 degree weather down here in FL:) I get to spend the day with my sister tomorrow, along with her 2 kitties. Funny you guys mentioned "Little Fockers." I just saw that tonight. Can't wait for it to come on DVD.

"Native American Totem ..."
"Crickets are considered good luck by most Native American tribes. Cricket wisdom is said to represent joy, intuition, power of belief. A cricket's ability to jump is said to offer the power to leap over a difficult situation. With the cricket as your totem, you can travel through darkness with sound."
