Some book resellers have a scanner for the barcode of the book that they can use to check to see if the book is worth reselling. One of the things some of them can do is you can set your lowest price and sales rank, so that when on Amazon, if the lowest price is more than you set yours at and the sales rank is within your range, it tells you. Let's say my minimum price was $5 and my sales rank went to 1 million in books (in the top 1 million bestselling books). I run my scanner on a book and the lowest price on Amazon is $10 and the sales rank is 500,000. That would fall into my range and be a "keeper".

I think these scanners are mostly for cell phones? It is something you can add on. As far as it being "legit", some places won't let you use them. I've been to some Friends of the Library sales where they are banned. Personally, I don't see what the big deal is. The place selling books is there to sell books, right? True, they could easily "gobble up" all the books so the regular people can't get to them. I guess it isn't fair either way.

I personally don't have a scanner because I don't want to spend the money and I think it might just work with a PC and I have a Mac (go Macs!). I'm going to get a smart phone any day now, though, so I am planning on seeing what kind of apps they might have. When I go to garage sales, I usually rely on my childlike appearance to get the good deals. I normally get mistaken for a teenager all the time, but for garage saling, I purposefully try to look and act younger and I think I might be able to pass for middle school. Yes, the people running the sale might wonder why I'm buying all these adult books, but do they really want to take away all my baby-sitting money? Now if I had a scanner, that would totally blow my cover :P

Thanks Brittany!
My purchases are made with the intent of keeping them - especially the books and record albums.
I didn't realize that browsing for bargains in thrift shops has become so "high tech"?!

Have I ever told you the story of "Angélique"? I knew it was an expensive book online (like $50) and I found it at a used bookstore as well as a couple of other books in the series. Before I sold it, I was curious about it and why it was so expensive (that's a whole other story), so I read it, and now that first book is worth much more to me than $50 and I refuse to part with it, even though I have since acquired another one that is hardcover and in nicer shape! Anyway, just reading that book instead of selling it really changed my life, I think.

And that was just from memory, no scanner! *bows*

"serendipity" perhaps?! :)
or, - as LauraG sometimes calls it - "synchronicity" ?! :)

sometimes - you'll find things in the most unexpected places ...
good things ...
things that you weren't - or, didn't even know that you were - looking for ...
but it seems as if they were "looking" for you?! :)
