- looking forward to Spring
- flower bulbs are now in the stores
- searched for some Iris (TN State flower)
- especially liked one variety of Iris in particular - "Shaker's Prayer"
- became curious about the origin of the name of this varierty
- "stumbled" upon a song entitled "Simple Gifts" ...
- from, Aaron Copeland's "Appalachian Spring"
- searched YouTube
- found a video (melody only) of "Simple Gifts"
- this video contains the photography of Ansel Adams

- got to thinkin'
- that melody sounds very familiar?!
- remember "Dr. MacNeill's" aunt on "Christy?
- I remember "Aunt Hattie" singin' this song (although, at the moment, I can't remember which episode in particular)
anyways ...
- "Aunt Hattie" was played by Judy Collins
- searched YouTube a little further, and found the following video of Judy singing "Simple Gifts"
- such a beautiful voice she has
- this was originally filmed in 1963 (which would be approximately 30 years prior to her appearances on "Christy" as "Aunt Hattie")

We just watched a Ken Burns documentary on the Shakers. VERY interesting. I think you would like it, BC.
There are only three Shakers left in the world in a community in Maine. At their peak, there were 6,000 Shakers in 19 different communities from Massachusetts to Indiana. The song "Simple Gifts" played throughout the documentary.
I was also thinking of spring and spring flowers because we were given some lovely yellow tulips today. :-) And we experienced 70 degree weather today, too.
I went to an Ansel Adams exhibit in Washington, D.C. a few years ago at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Talk about breath-taking! His stuff always makes me want to hit the open road.

You're welcome, BC! Wasn't it fascinating? I guess that whole celibacy issue didn't work to their advantage, which is really too bad because their dedication, work ethic and way of life is really admirable. It's sad to think that there are just a few Shakers left. We were thinking how amazing it would be to join them, even for a little while, but then how would we explain the kids? Whoops.
You should visit the communities close to you and take lots of pictures! Their simple style of architecture and building design is beautiful. I think we're going to visit the one in Enfield, CT and maybe the ones in NH and ME this summer if we travel East (fuel prices pending).
