They are having thunder snow in Topeka. That usually means about 2 inches an hour. Haven't heard any thunder yet tonight and hope I don't. Glad to be home safe and warm.

Here it comes, BC. You don't get thunder snow or thunder freezing rain? That is the worst kind because it produces the most snow or ice. No thunder for us but still snowing.

Just taken:

Feb. 24 snow

Hi Deb!
Thanks for sharing the vid's and info re: "thundersnow"!
I was gonna reply sooner but our electricity went out here in Lebanon last night around 9 p.m., and it didn't come back on until 5 a.m. this morning ...
- just in time to leave for work
- we had quite a storm pass through middle TN last night!
http://www.wkrn.com/story/14138722/strong-winds-heavy-rain-down-power-lines-trees

anyways ...
after reading through your last two messages ...
once again, my curiousity got the better of me ...
began a search ...
found some info at NASA's site re: "thundersnow" ...

"What made this snowstorm act like a thunderstorm?
- Petersen explains ...

"You rarely have lightning in a snowstorm. But in this case, some unique conditions set the stage for it. Moist air at the bottom of the storm was lifted up, rapidly forming snow and ice. Some of the snow even grew in pellet forms called 'graupel' he says..."

"Snowflakes and ice pellets of different sizes ascended at different rates--and they began to exchange charges. The process isn't fully understood, but it could be a result of particles rubbing together (like wool socks on carpet). As the cloud charged up, it began to act less like an ordinary winter snowstorm and more like a summer thunderstorm ...

BC and all,

Well, we now have something NEW in the weather department. Dense fog advisories over the past couple of days and severe thunderstorm warnings tonight with a rain, turning to sleet turning to snow in the morning. Okay, the last part for the morning isn't new but fog and thunderstorms are!

"oh my" is a very good descriptor for some of the weather "going's on" of late Deb! :)
- if you have to go out in any of the bad weather, be careful driving!

my "storm spotter" daughter says we have La Nina / El Nino and warming patterns to "thank" ...

- went on a brief search ...
- found a NASA / "Earth Observatory" page with links to several weather related articles ...
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/archive.php?cat_id=18

amongst the articles listed ...
- found one re: the Quake in New Zealand ...

- and, another one re: NASA's "Glory in the Sky" satellite mission ...

Hello, I'm new here. The weather in Texas is warm and humid, and we had to turn the A/C on this afternoon and it's still February.

Thanks for the welcome. Hard to believe but just 2 weeks ago it was 19 degrees. Crazy Texas weather.

- I'm glad you joined us Sheila! :)

Right now in mid TN, it's near 70 degrees ...
- just past 6:30 in the evening (our time).
The weather service has issued all kinds of "warnings" and "watches" for us this evening and tomorrow!
I'd say "crazy weather" very well sums up the situation 'round here too! :)

I hope you have a great week though!
- BC
