Subject: Antique toys

We3Kings asked about what kind of toys would be around in 1911.

You might want to check this site for some ideas:
http://www.ushist.com/victorian_toys-and-games_f.shtml

Since I spent a lot of time as a kid going to antique stores, here are a few I can think of:

pencil and paper games like x and o
all kids of dolls from paper, cloth, sock, sawdust, corn husk, wooden to china or porcelain dolls
doll accessories: prams, high chairs, dollhouses, clothes, mirrors, combs and brushes, tea sets and dinner sets (made of pewter or china or even wood)
stuffed animals, especially teddy bears about around 1903
Yo-Yo's
wooden and cast iron, nickel-plated or coppered steel toys - animals or wheeled toys - pull toys
wooden rocking horses
toy tins
puzzles
wooden spinning tops
instruments - drums, whistles, pipes, bells
Tiddlywinks
badminton
ring games
cork guns
Milton Bradley toys/games
croquet
alphabet blocks
ropes - jumping ropes
Noah's Ark toys
card games
balls - many made of rags stuffed with sawdust
mechanical or animatronic toys and a few steam-powered toys
clockwork toys like tin toys and banks - toys set in motion by the weight of sand or marbles
cup and ball
puppets and marionettes
rolling hoop and stick
board game Snakes and Ladders, I believe was around since the late 1800s
there were even a few toy cars and tractors in the early 1900s
wooden and paper sail boats
bats and balls

That is all I can think of right now. Hope it helps.

Debbie S.

had a good laugh on that one, too!

I did not know erector sets were that old though.

Neat.

Thanks a ton!!!

In the book I am writing, I have Christy purchasing a few toys to take back with her as Christmas presents for the children. SO, with that in mind, I wanted them to be realistic to 1911/1912.

Just looked up erector set and it wasn't made till 1913. My Grandfather had toys in the basement and they were very very old. I got to play with my Grandmother's doll. She was a rag doll stuffed with sawdust and her hair was made of yarn. Her face was painted on cloth and her dress was like a gingham material with lots of tatting on the front. My Grandfather was a carpeter by trade, and made the local children holiday toys and repaired their toys that needed mending. My Grandparents were both from Tennessee and were born in the late 1800's. My father was born in 1914. Sorry about the date mix up with the erector set.

Toys!! Love em!

Toy soldiers, Lincoln Logs, toy cars and trains, Teddy bears, Jigsaw puzzles, Wooden dolls, erector sets, wind-up toys...

Gosh, so many to choose from.

Hope this helps!

And, I kinda like the "Jacob's Ladder" [tumbling blocks].
