It's actually quite interesting when you watch them. At Arlinton National racecourse there's the Chicago version of the derby. Where I live it cuts between regualar racing, ie the normal in saddle type, and cart racing. Only thing is that the city of Chicago screwed up and made part of the track into a car race course which they don't use anymore. (The new track was moved to Joliet and now we have an eyesore on our hands.) But when I was younger (5,6) my grandparents use to walk down with me to the race track and we use to watch the horses. Infact this one time I kept picking the winning horse for three races in a row.

Hawthorne racecourse, way back in the twenties actually caught on fire. The horse were running in the streets of our town for a while. What's really neat I think is the fact that both race tracks are like sisters to eachother. When Sportsman (the track that was turned into the car track) was being remodled Hawthorn let them use their track for the season. :)

In the morning, when I'm going to school, especially in the fall, I sometimes catch the trainers working with the horses and giving them their workouts.

My favorite horse is actually the Arabian. I love their coats. :) But I'm not a big Clydesdale fan. When I was little they actually scared me due to the fact that they were so big, and I was so small. I'm still amazed by their size, and I'm still really small compared to them. (I'm only 4'11" in hight.)
