Subject: Not a good day for World Cup teams from English speaking countries.

Germany 1, USA 0.
Brazil 2, England 1.

It's what I expected, but I was kinda hoping for better. Especially with my own country's team: I was hoping the ride would continue. What we got was a moral victory: we basically outplayed a German team that's supposed to be a serious contender for the title, but still lose. Yeah, there's that handball by the German defender that may have cost us a goal, but we benefitted from a similar play vs Mexico, so I don't feel like complaining.

U.S. Soccer (yeah, I call it "soccer", deal with it) has come a long way. This is unlike 1994, where getting out of group play was by accident and attributable to our home crowd advantage. This is certainly unlike 1998 where we just plain stunk. We weren't one of the big boys this time, but we were good enough to play with anyone. We played with a bit of a swagger. We sent a message to the rest of the world, that even if we call it by a different name and few of our fans understand the sport, we can play. Making 3 World Cups in a row and making it out of group play 2 of those times is no small feat, and this time we were truly competitive. And you know what? The smart money is on us getting better, not worse.
