Subject: An amusing sidenote on this topic

First of all, I must make a confession - sometimes late at night, I listen to a UK station called Talk Radio. This station holds forth on many topics, people call in, yadda yadda, you know the drill, folks. On Friday night they had an American presenter in, and he was (unsurprisingly) talking about the current Iraq situation. Like many people, he seemed quite pro-war, advocating the new US defense position of pre-emptive treatment of potential threats and putting Iraq at the top of his list. This brought something from our discussion to mind:

"when you or someone asociated with you says something hateful and insulting, it does end up reflecting bad on you, whether that's fair or not."

The presenter was, shall we say.......slightly biased, which was no good for me since I wanted to relax and get to sleep, not lie in bed, get wound up and end up awake till all hours. My passion was aroused to fury over several calls when the man refused to discuss anything other than the moral right of the US to defend itself through a strong offense. On the verge of getting up and phoning in myself, another caller did the job for me, albeit unintentionally. The caller's point was that the US' current stand on Terrorist Regimes and Dictatorships is at odds with the past - ie, that in the past the US and many other governments have aided regimes that are, at best, morally dubious. The fellow accused the presenter of trying to sell a "comic book view of foreign policy" to his listeners. This sent the presenter into a fury and he cut the fellow off and went into a five-minute rant about his views and how they were correct and nothing else was anywhere close. He labelled the previous caller an anti-semite because he had said "Israel" in a sentence (we never did get to hear what his point was, because....well, guess, but I can assure you all, he wasn't being anti-semitic at all in his call) and went on and on and on........all of this stoking the fires of my anger. Sleep, it would seem, would be many long hours coming to me that night. Then, deliverance:

"I do not have a comic book view on foreign policy. Let me tell you, people - this is a fight of good against evil!"

Satisfied, with the sound of his argument crashing down around his ears, I rolled over and went to sleep.
