Bali is one of the most popular tourist destinations for Australians, since Indonesia is -- geographically speaking -- our nearest neighbour.

The reason why Australians are taking the attack so close to heart is because:

1. Many Australians were killed, even if it was on foreign soil. I suppose it is akin to the American reaction to the attack on the USS Cole, although in the case of Bali, it was all civilian deaths.

2. Bali is a very popular destination for Aussies and there are a lot of Australian ex-patriots who live there. Although there are certainly other nationalities present, the majority of foreigners in Bali are Australians. Just as although there were Australians who died in the WTC attack, the majority of casualties would've been Americans.

3. The nightclubs that were targetted had very few Balinese people in it, as they were exclusive clubs for foreigners. This policy was established to deter local prostitutes from entering the clubs in search of clients. This was NOT an attack on Bali or on the state of Indonesia, since they specifically chose a target that would maximise the number of Australian and other foreigner casualties, and minimise the number of local casualties. The terrorists specifically attacked Westerners in order to gain more media coverage. If they only attacked Balinese people, then it would've only been a one evening news story. ;p

...the news coverage is still going on, and as more survivors are returning to Australia, we're hearing more and more horrifying first hand accounts of what happened. Prime Minister Howard is scheduled to visit Ground Zero soon (an Australian flag has already been placed there) to give his support to the people there.
