Obviously, at least part of the terrorists' plan was to kill Westerners. But if the culprits are who we suspect they are (i.e. Jemaah Islamiah), then I'm led to believe that killing Westerners, or even killing in general, wasn't the primary objective. From what I can tell, it appears that their primary objective was to ruin the livelihood of the Balinese, particularly those that cater to Western tourists. Unfortunately, it seems to be working, though I can't blame the Australian government for asking people to stay away. Perhaps an economic aid package to Bali is in order.

Although I've been mostly impressed by the Australians' response, I've read of more individual responses that I find troubling. No doubt, the same sort of responses would crop up no matter which country was involved. Actually, Richard Glover of the Sydney Morning Herald seems to echo my concerns, and he expresses them better than I can.
