I recently had a run in with a woman who did not think that "Paki" was a racist term. I am not sure of its use in other countries, but over here "Paki" has been used as a term of hate for people of Indian/Pakistani descent for many years. I hate it - as do many others - but it is still in use, which is a hateful situation. However, the woman I had the argument with thought it was not a racist term to say she was going to the "Paki's shop round the corner." since she was, according to her, simply describing the person who owned the shop. She didn't get my point that using "Paki" was no more acceptable than saying "The nigger's shop" or "The poof's shop" (and yeesh, it makes my skin crawl to type those bloody words!) Suffice to say I made my point as best I could and left the debate before I said something unkind.

As for the OzFormers debate, this Charlie fellow does seem to have apologised for his use of the word Jap - and he seemed genuinely sorry for the misunderstanding caused. I would say that you have done what you set out to do, Goktimus - made your point to the fellow who made the mistake in the first place, he's acknowledged it, and done something about it. I wish it was that easy all across the board. I am happy for the other OzFormers to continue the debate here though, as long as they don't break the single rule that's ever been in place here - be well mannered towards one another.
