I've often pointed that out in other forums, and got much the same response. I suspect that the kind of people that use the word "Jap" as an abbreviation are fairly young, enough that they've never heard that word used as a slur, and they generally seem to behave as if the world didn't come into being until 20 (or less) years ago. While it's an honest mistake on their part, I view it as a mistake nonetheless, as there are still plenty of people around that do get offended by that word. It's use as a racial slur may be starting to pass into archaity, and if so it's good to have one less racial slur available. However, I still advise avoiding the use of that word. Really, it doesn't hurt to type five more letters.
