The only reservation I have is that the head is only fixed on by one comparitively small ball joint - always strikes me as a little fragile

I haven't had any problems with that joint. The most fragile joints on this toy seem to be the back panel that opens up for the head to flip into during transformation to truck mode, and the ankles... the feet seem to drop off easy during play. Other than that, Transformer par excellence!
