For starters there is the "familiar face" aspect. It could well make the Autobots more receptive to whatever plans the Military had if they have Spike (Probably the only human alive the Autobots would be sure to listen to) on side. Spike might not be as fond of the Autobots as he once was either.

Or, and a wild shot in the dark here, unless he still has the imprint of the Creation Matrix inside him.
