I hate judging a series, especially a Star Trek series, by its first season. I think this first season of Enterprise has been only so-so. I'd say its actually weaker than Voyager was at this point. However, I think Voyager had the strongest first season of any Trek series, with episodes like "The Caretaker" and "Jetrel", then backslid. The Next Generation had the weakest first season of all the Trek series, yet went on to become the best loved of the series--and becoming on of TVGuide's 50 all-time greatest television series.

I didn't think "Fusion" and "Rogue Planet" were terrible. I could name a few TNG episodes that were worse. However, they certainly weren't quite up to what we've come to expect from Trek. There was the usual moral dilemma, but after the episode you kinda just shrugged and forgot about it. I agree that "Detained" was a fantastic episode, deserving to be counted among the all-time best of Star Trek. Then again, even though Voyager was the weakest Trek series, it did have episodes that were just as great and just as wonderfully thought-provoking, such as "Jetrel" and "Friendship One".

Enterprise hasn't been perfect. It's only now, thanks to "Detained", that the Suliban have become an somewhat interesting adversary, and the whole Temporal Cold War has yet to be interesting. But some things have worked well: the whole love-hate relationship between humans and Vulcans in this time period, the protrayal of Vulcans as being less-than-perfect and capable of deception, and the Andorians have been interesting. There's enough here to make me look forward to seeing what's in store for the season finale and next season.
