Optimus may be a bit thick sometimes, but he's not that stupid (I hope). He'd never give an absolutely vital piece fo the Matrix to anyone as a souvenir. I'd say the piece of the Matrix Spike got would not normally have been vital, possibly a tertiary redundancy power coupler or the like. When Prime was damaged in the (unexpected) crash his Matrix access was severed, so it was useless. When Spike replaced the component the alternate power route within the Matrix was reactivated (as it would have been instantly had Spike not been given his piece) and Prime was restored. IMHO of course.
