Subject: Keeping Young

Couple of weeks ago, as I took a shortcut through the Media Center at school (when did the library become a media center?), a group of students were cutting out gold stars so I stopped to inquire what the stars were going to be used for. One of the girls replied that the stars were part of their "marketing campaign" for the upcoming theater group stage presentation.

" We need a teacher for a small part, do you want to read for the role?" one asked.

Jokingly I said yes. A script was immediately thrust into my hand and and I was told ld to read the part of the specialist on page 37. I read through it silently first, then gave it my best hurried shot. They looked around the table at one another quickly, nodded their heads and one announced, "You've got the part."

Making a short story shorter, I've been rehearsing with the cast and crew every evening for the past week and a half, and having a great time with these wanna-be thespians.

While I began this gig to help them out, the experience has turned out to be very rewarding. The students work hard and have a lot of fun. Their acceptance of this old warhorse, who had already won their hearts and minds (and respect) in the classroom as a sub, contributes further to keeping me young at heart and memory sharp. Oh, and the catered food between run throughs has been really good. I am really in this for the chow, now.
