Subject: Columbia wasn't a political tragedy but is becoming one

Hi everyone,

The space shuttle tragedy of 2/1/03 appears to have been caused by either mechanical or structural failure. It’s too early to say for certain. One thing is certain though, it was not shot down by a terrorist missile. We can say that because no one has the technology to fire a missile to those altitudes. That doesn’t stop the conspiracy fanatics and others with a political agenda to try and advance some extremely outrageous and unsubstantiated theories.

The real outrage is that people are probing for ways to use this tragedy to make political gain. Personally, I’m completely disgusted with that tactic. My opinion won’t stop them though. I’m writing this as an appeal to all good readers to think twice before they engage in those types of debates. Think about what good can ultimately come such a discussion. Also think about the damage it can do. The accident needs an investigation. The investigation should focus on what happened; what can be done to ensure it doesn’t happen again; and how best to implement needed changes. A witch hunt will not help prevent further accidents. It can only further the poisoned politics of personal destruction. And that would be the real tragedy of Columbia.

Richard
