Overall, I'm hoping this war goes as well for America as possible, because I think a swift war will be best for all involved. However, in another sense, there will be something lost if we have relatively little hardship in winning this war. I forget the exact quotation, but some general said something to the effect that it's a good thing war is so horrible, or we would grow too fond of it. By extension, if this war is not horrible (at least not horrible for those countries that decided to start it), we are likely to grow fonder of war as a tool of diplomacy.

If you know that a few thousand Americans will die if you start a war, you'll only start the war if you have a genuine belief that it is absolutely necessary (a belief that all other options have been exhausted, and that the goal is worth the blood of so many brave Americans). If, on the other hand, you're confident that you can fight a war with little loss of American life, you're more likely to jump into it when there are still other options available. That makes unjust future wars more likely (if you buy the theory that a "just war" must be a war of last resort). If this war goes too smoothly, there's a much better chance that, not too far down the road, we'll be setting our sites on Iran, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the Sudan, etc.
