My Great Great Grandfather was Benjamin Cleveland. He was born Feb 12, 1792 in
Franklin, Ga. and died Jan 26, 1879 in Stewart Co., Ga. General Benjamin Cleveland, for
whom Cleveland, Georgia is named, was a hero of the War of 1812, fought with and
was a friend of Andrew Jackson. He was a planter, soldier, builder, and politician, was
elected to the Georgia legislature as a Republican for over 20 years and had extensive
land holdings in North Georgia. These included the Nacoochee Valley, near Helen,
Georgia, the Tallulah Gorge, and most of the land now covered by the waters of Lakes
Rabun and Burton in Rabun County. He lived for many years in Clarksville, Georgia.
General Ben led numerous campaigns against the indians in the southeast.

If anyone has additional information about Benjamin, I would appreciate it very much.

J.M,
It is my understanding that my line of family is descended from one of his two sons in direct patriarchal line. Jasper Cleveland was born and raised in the Lake Hartwell area in South Carolina. He came from Tugaloo and is son to one of the two boys of Benjamin Cleveland. That makes him my great, great, great, great grandfather. My grandgfather will be giving me the documents that are handwritten from Georgia about all of us. It will take me some time to pour through these and decipher them, but it was my intent to get these into a computerized format and make copies to distribute. If you are willing to be patient, I will be happy to get you a copy of the disk when complete. Please make sure I have your regular mail. Hopefully it will only take a few weeks to pour through and get presentable. I am sure it will have information about Benjamin considering his sons.
Regards,
Virginia Cleveland

Benjamin Cleveland is also my great, great, great grandfather. According to my information he was a Colonel instead of a General however. I don't know which is correct. He is buried in Hollomon Creek Cemetery which is on a dirt road about 5 miles West of my house in Louvale (Stewart County), Georgia. His wife Amelia Hooper Cleveland is also buried there as well as several other Clevelands. His daughter was Harriett Cleveland Johnston, who was my great, great grandmother. She was married to Thomas Johnston. They are also buried at Hollomon along with many more of their clan. There is also a J. M. (James Monroe) Cleveland buried there. I think he was Col. Cleveland's son judging from the dates on his grave. He may very well be your namesake. You can find a registry of those who are buried at Hollomon by searching on Google with the following search string : Hollomon Creek Cemetery Stewart Co Ga .
