There is a lot of stuff in the so called "Expanded Universe". I've heard various things about Lucas' feelings on the subject. Some have told me that he has to approve every book that comes out, but that seems ludicrous to me. More likely, bureaucrats are in charge of all of that.

But "Heir to the Empire", "Dark Force Rising", and "The Last Command" are highly regarded, I think, as the kickoff for the post-Jedi EU stuff. It features the appearance of Mara Jade (Luke's wife) and the birth of Leia's twins. These characters have become very important in other people's novels as the writers seem to agree that it is best to stick with a canon.

I liked the books when I read them (in junior high). I hoped that they would make them into movies, but looking back now, I don't think that they are really what I would want to see. In the end, I would rather end "Return of the Jedi" with "And they lived happily ever after."
