I am not sure I completely understand everything that is happening in this story, but I did find some amusement in the way Rose describes this event.

First of all, I had to wonder about the potatoes. Ernestine describes them burning on the stove. Then she describes her father eating the scrorched potatoes. Then she describes the scorched potato kettle soaking. I am sure there is nothing going on here, but when the scorched potatoes were mentioned for the third time, I had to wonder if there was some kind of meaning there. Probably not, but I had to wonder. I reckon that is why my students tell me I analyze things too much.

I read the end of this story several times, but I could not figure out the excitement about the derbies. Maybe I am missing something, but I could not understand why everyone wanted to buy them. Did it have to do with trying to get the 10th one for free. Anyway, I did have a good laugh over the way Ernestine describes her respected father staggering out of the crowd with 5 derbies as though he was drunk.

I am going to have to do a little reading on the penison certificates and gold. I imagine this was very important to Rose's political views.

I wonder why Ernestine was so interested in Ab and how he got the money for the derbies?

I would love this story to go on so I could see Ernestine face Mrs. Barbrook.
