I had my son tested by an independent dyslexia specialists suggested by a friend. It was extensive and heart wrenching. The length of the testing will depend on the child and severity of the dyslexia. My son's testing was conducted over 2 separate days about 3 hours each day and covered several areas. He was very tired after this testing, much like after trying to read. He, like other dyslexics, was mentally exhausted. I was able to speak to our tester prior to testing and we discussed what would happen. You should do this too. Also be sure that your tester is going to provide you with a detailed report and document to what extent your child's dyslexia, if found to be dyslexic, impairs any major life activities (ie learning, reading, communicating). This is needed when asking for accommodations for your child. My son has a 504 plan, not an IEP. Hope this helps. Again, please take a look at Susan Barton's website. She is an endless fountain of information on dyslexia and is willing to talk to you about your child. I can't thank her enough for the guidance she provided me. Also, check out the book Overcoming Dyslexia by Sally Shaywitz. This is a wonderful book that goes in to detail on dyslexia. And more importantly, you are doing a wonderful job finding answers for your child, be patient and be persistent.
