Shelia, your situation does sound similar. Crazy that it has to be so difficult to just get these kids some help! I have made my sons appointment to have him medically diagnosed for dyslexia and upon requesting paperwork from the school for records, his special ed evaluation from last year I found out his teacher lied to me and that he was NEVER tested last year. Oh boy did I raise hell with them! Apparently it was discussed within their special ed team but was never done. How can a child be this far behind and not tested!? I was in the schools face all year last year. Talked with his teacher numerous times, the principal and the district psychologist. So it wasn't like I wasn't asking questions or being involved. Really makes you wonder how many other kids just slip through the cracks when their parents aren't being proactive. I wrote them an email that was not so nice. Needless to say I received a phone call from the district psychologist by 8:30 the next morning and have a meeting scheduled to have him tested before his dyslexia testing on the 30th. Amazing how quickly things are moving now! Also I have been told that the schools will not give an IEP to dyslexic students due to it being a medical need not learning and that he will receive a 504 instead. My best bet to get him the help he needs is to have him diagnosed with ADHD cause then he will receive an IEP. I don't plan to go that route and will refuse any medical treatment for ADHD. The roller coaster continues!!
