The "talking pen", I am not sure which product you are specifically referring to, however I have used the Livescribe Pulse pen product. For over 4 years this pen has been a great success for me. I am an adult with both ADHD and low grade dyslexia. I have excellent information retention when I can stay in the moment. Taking notes at meetings in which I also have to actively participate, is a challenge. Discretely using the digital recording pen, permitted me to take notes, and be interactive without being afraid I would miss something. The pen, records both my written text and the audio it hears in the room. Special "dot" paper is used to control the pens actions and encode what is written. The internal IR camera, microphone, and processor do all the work. The technology originally came from Sweden or Denmark and is licensed for use by Livescribe, Inc. located in Oakland California, USA.

After each meeting I print my notes, then transcribe the audio and then delete the audio recording. Permission is required to record conversations in most situations. In the educational world this is less of an issue and often expected. I did have to learn to correctly manage the Livescribe desk top software and keep my notes and recordings properly sequenced. I could usually get 3+ hrs of recording from each full charge on the pen. For my needs the Livescribe product as been a great tool. You can buy refurb pens to try at half the cost of new ones. I would recommend that path if you want to test it out first. www.livescribe.com have good videos and informaton about the product. I have given these pens as gifts to students. Be advised the ink cartridges are the weak area for the product. They are short and you use a fair number of them. However, the benefit it provides I think out weigh the cost. I hope that helps.
