Hi Sara!
Our son was diagnosed with dyslexia last year and even though dyslexia is recognized here, the majority of teachers / school officials we have worked with so far are reluctant to help our son and work with us as far as modifications / adjustments in class for him. So, it's been left to us to figure out what we can do to help him out at home. He's in first grade and we're helping him at home with his weekly spelling test (he also has 10 word spelling tests every week). Every night, we write each spelling word on one row of a lined sheet of paper. He has to write each word as many times as it will fit on that single row, that's all. The only condition is that as he writes each word, he must say each letter as he writes it and then say the word as he finishes writing it each time (we will help him sound it out the first time if he needs help). Sometimes, we will give him a "practice" spelling test to see how he's doing. The repitition seems to really help him, although it takes a lot of encouragement. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me directly at greyleigh@hotmail.com. Good luck with everything!
